Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences Launches a New Project to Develop an AI-Based Personalized Learning Technology

Since October 2025, Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences (ViA) has been coordinating the project “AI4EDULAB: Ethical, AI-Based and Labour-Market-Aligned Personalized Study Content.” The project brings together researchers from five Latvian higher education institutions to implement artificial intelligence (AI)–driven approaches that better align education with labour market needs.

On 11 December, an in-person seminar was held where all project participants shared the work completed so far. This included mapping regulatory documents in Latvia and Europe, structuring key points they would like to see reflected in these documents, and discussing academic integrity and copyright in the age of artificial intelligence. Participants also explored AI-driven support for course development and planning, as well as the use of generative artificial intelligence for personalized learning. “At present, higher education institutions do not have a unified regulatory framework for artificial intelligence. Through interviews, our team is also researching current usage practices,” explains Dean and researcher Aija Cunska.

The project involves researchers from Latvian higher education institutions as well as doctoral students from Latvia and abroad.

The expected outcomes are designed with a focus on human-centred principles, transparency, and the use of AI for enhancement, while maintaining pedagogical rigor and human agency. To address ethical challenges, the project compares academic integrity systems in Latvia and the European Union and develops practical guidelines for AI-generated learning materials. The project supports the modernization of universities, strengthens digital learning policies, improves study programmes, and enhances competencies in the use of artificial intelligence. AI4EDULAB will deliver scalable and evidence-based solutions, positioning Latvia as a significant developer of AI applications in the field of education.
